Black Sesame Seeds

(黑芝麻)

Sesame seeds are a main spice and food source throughout Asia and parts of Europe and Africa.

Sesame seeds also have various medicinal uses. In traditional Chinese medicine, black sesame seeds are associated with the Kidney and Liver meridians.

Black sesame seeds are an extremely good source of calcium; studies have shown that one gram of seeds contains approximately 85 milligrams of calcium. Black sesame seeds also have high amounts of protein, phosphorous, iron and magnesium. Some practitioners recommend using black sesame seeds with polygonum to keep a person's hair looking rich and dark.

 

Glutinous Rice (Sticky Rice)

(糯米)

Glutinous rice (also called sticky rice) is a type of short-grained Asian rice that is especially sticky when cooked.

Zongzi (粽子, pic on the left) is a Chinese dumpling consisting of glutinous rice and savoury fillings wrapped in leaves which is then boiled or steamed, commonly eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival.

Glutinous rice is also often ground to make glutinous rice flour. This flour is then made into rice cakes and sweet filled rice balls, both of which are commonly eaten at Chinese new year. It also sometimes used as a thickener and for baking.

Green Tea Powder (Matcha)

Matcha (green tea powder) is a fine, powdered green tea. Matcha is generally expensive compared to other forms of tea, although its price depends on its quality.

Matcha is now a common ingredient used as flavouring in many Western-style chocolates, candy, and desserts, such as cakes and pastries, cookies, pudding, mousse, and green tea ice cream.

The use of matcha in modern drinks has also spread to North American cafés. It has become integrated into lattes, iced drinks, milkshakes, and smoothies.

 

Red bean (红豆)

The azuki bean (commonly called red bean) is an annual vine widely grown throughout East Asia and the Himalayas.

Red bean paste is a sweet, dark red bean paste originating from China.

Red bean paste is used as stuffing in many Chinese foods, such as sticky rice balls, zongzi, mooncakes, buns, and red bean smoothies. A more liquid version, using red beans boiled with sugar, lotus seeds, and orange peel, produces a sweet dish called red bean soup.

 

Red dates (红枣)

Red date (Chinese jujube) is a superior herb, most widely employed in the Chinese pharmacopoeia adding to herbal formulas to prolong, enhance, and harmonize the effect of the other ingredients. Red dates are also commonly found in desserts.

Because red dates has great therapeutic effects such as nourishing blood and calming the mind for insomnia and restlessness; they are very popular ingredient specially for females.
